The self-storage industry is still quite new to Germany. However, it has been booming more and more since the early 2010s. There are still many myths floating about that people believe in.

We read about these things online, and existing or potential customers ask our staff about them. We want to take the time to dispel some of these self-storage myths, have a close look, and fact-check them.

Myth – you can store whatever you want

The first myth we want to look at is that you can store whatever you want at LAGER.de. In principle, this is not a false statement. You can use our storage units to store files and documents, for example.

Other popular storage goods include company equipment, merchandise, furniture and household belongings, motorcycles and sports equipment, tools and equipment for assemblers, as well as goods for an online store.

But there are also things that you shouldn’t put into storage at LAGER.de. They include perishable goods like food, poisonous or in other ways dangerous substances or items, and, of course, anything illegal like drugs or weapons. Other than that, the choice of what to store really is yours.

Myth – you only rent a storage unit when moving

The second myth is that only people who are moving need additional storage space. This myth is definitely false. Many people don’t have a dry cellar or, more generally, not enough space. If you own things that you don’t need that are frequently cluttering your home, you might want to store these items elsewhere.

By the way: If you do want to access the stored items at short notice, you can do so at LAGER.de hassle-free.

We are open around the clock on every day of the year. Our customers have a range of interesting reasons for storing their belongings with us. For example, some need a place to put their surfboard in winter, others are going to study abroad.

The passing of a loved one can be a sad but common reason for using self-storage. Following somebody’s death, you might use LAGER.de to temporarily store this person’s personal effects.

Myth – you can sleep in your storage unit

The third myth relating to our outdoor storage park is that you can sleep in your rented box. This is strictly prohibited and checked by our security company. Additionally, all our premises are under round-the-clock video surveillance, which is primarily installed to protect our customers.

Apart from the fact that a storage unit is not an affordable flat, it is also not safe for health reasons. The units are not sufficiently ventilated for humans.

Myth – stored goods are auctioned off

The fourth and last myth is from TV. TV shows like “Storage Wars” from the US, which are also shown on German TV, have made people familiar with the concept of selling off the content of the lockers. This is done either by the owner or the company managing the storage units.

At LAGER.de, this is not the case and is also illegal under German law. When storage units are left behind and rent is not paid despite repeated notifications, a removal company usually clears them, often resulting in additional costs for LAGER.de. These shows are often scripted to create a more dramatic plot.

In reality, the units don’t contain that many precious treasures.

As you can tell, many self-storage myths are untrue. Before buying into a myth, it’s always important to fact-check and see for yourself.

On top of offering you more space!

LAGER.de offers additional benefits

Access to the storage park is only possible with a code. All units are secured with padlocks, are dry, and clean. Our premises are well-lit, bright, and fenced.

The storage rooms are opaque and can only be looked into and accessed by our customers. Thanks to natural ventilation, there are no major temperature fluctuations. In terms of price, the boxes at our outdoor storage park are typically cheaper than comparable indoor self-storage opportunities.

From small boxes of 1.78 square metres to large boxes with 14.2 square metres, we have the size to match every need.
